Surrogacy

Due to low cost and availability of women opting to be surrogates for childless couples, India is foremost in surrogacy treatment.
Surrogacy is when another woman carries and gives birth to a child for couples who are childless. Although it can be a complex way which includes emotional and legal arrangements, it is still growing in popularity among childless parents as a way of having their own children.
It requires a lot of time, money and patience to succeed. If all the aspects such as the medical, legal, financial and emotional aspects are properly considered, then it can bring happiness to all concerned couples.

Why choose surrogacy?
You may choose surrogacy as an option under following conditions to start a new family.

  • If you have had recurrent miscarriages.
  • If fertility treatments such as IVF (In vitro fertilization) have failed.
  • If your uterus is absent or abnormal since birth or there is some problem after a hysterectomy.
  • If you have any health condition that can make your pregnancy and childbirth dangerous.
  • If you are in a same-sex relationship.

2 Types of surrogacy-
Generally, there are two primary types of surrogacy- Traditional surrogacy and Gestational Surrogacy.

Traditional surrogacy-
Traditional surrogacy is rarely chosen by the childless couples because it creates a genetic link between potential parents and surrogate mother. Surrogate in this type of surrogacy acts as both an egg donor as well as an actual surrogate and she is impregnated with the semen taken from intended parents or from any sperm donor.
Traditional surrogacy is completed by the process of IUI (Intrauterine insemination) or IVF (In vitro fertilization). We can say that the surrogate in this surrogacy is also called as the biological mother of the child.

Gestational surrogacy-
In gestational surrogacy, there is no any such biological connection with surrogate and the baby. So, this type of surrogacy is commonly done. The surrogate mother becomes pregnant by using IVF procedure. Embryo gets developed from the eggs of intended mother or the egg donor and sperm of intended father or sperm donor. Embryos are then transferred into the gestational or surrogate mother (not biological).
In this whole process, the child will not have any biological relation with the surrogate mother. And so, this is preferred over another type of surrogacy.

What are the advantages of surrogacy?
Surrogacy can give you and your partner a chance to have your own child who is partially or completely yours genetically. This genetic link is either through your partner’s sperm or through an embryo that was created using your own eggs and your partner’s sperm.
