Ovarian Cystectomy:
Ovarian Cyst
Many women get cysts during their childbearing years. It’s comforting to know that most ovarian cysts are benign (not cancerous). And they often go away on their own. Your Doctor can monitor your cyst. She can also guide treatment if needed.

A cyst is usually a fluid -filled pouch. The size of cyst can vary. It can be as small as a pea or as large as grapefruit. Ovarian cysts often cause no symptoms. But, if a cyst twists or breaks, it can cause pain.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a condition that causes multiple cysts to form at the same time. PCOS may cause irregular periods and increased body hair. PCOS can also prevent pregnancy. Timely diagnosis and treatment along with weight loss may reduce the risk of long-term issues, such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Laparoscopic Ovarian Drilling (Ovarian Diathermy) for PCOS/Treatment for PCOS:

Laparoscopic ovarian drilling could be a surgery treatment that may trigger ovulation in women who have PCOS. Electrocautery or a laser is used to destroy portions of the ovaries.

This surgery is not usually used. But it can be a choice for women who are still not ovulating after reducing weight and trying fertility medicines.

Ovarian drilling is sometimes done through laparoscopy, with general anesthesia. The surgeon makes a small cut (incision) in the abdomen at the belly button. The surgeon then places a tube to inflate the abdomen with a small amount of carbon dioxide gas so that he or she can insert the viewing instrument (laparoscope) without damage to the internal organs.

The surgeon looks through the laparoscope at the inner organs. Surgical instruments is also inserted through the same incision or other small incisions in the pelvic area.

Because the incisions are so minor, laparoscopy is often called “Band-Aid surgery.”

What to Expect

If you have a laparoscopy surgery, you will likely go home the same day and can do your regular doings within 24 hours. Your return to normal activities will depend on how fast you recover from surgery, which may take a few days or as long as 2 to 4 weeks.

Why it is Done

Ovarian drilling is usually used for women with PCOS who are still not ovulating after trying weight loss and fertility medicine. Destroying part of the ovaries may reestablish consistent ovulation cycles.

How Well It Works

For women who do not showing any positive outcomes  after treatment with medicine, such as clomiphene, about 50% of them may be able to become pregnant after they have ovarian drilling surgery.
