Sperm motility defines as the capability of the sperm to move forward towards the ovum. Generally, a ‘healthy sperm’ of a man should be able to move forward at the rate of at least 25 micrometers/ second. However, if the sperm does not move at this normal rate, the condition is called as asthenozoospermia.
There are 2 types of sperm motility-
- Progressive motility: sperm are swimming in a mostly straight line
- Non-progressive motility: sperm are swimming in very tight circles
Sperm Motility Grouping
Grade a – These showing sperms are with non-progressive motility that means they tend to travel in a curved or crooked motion.
Grade b – These showing sperms are with non-progressive motility that means they tend to travel in a curved or crooked motion.
Grade c – These showing sperms are immotile sperm, fluttering their tails, or they fail to move at all.
And Overall Motility (which is 40%) in a semen analysis report is given as the Total of progressive sperm motility grade and non-progressive sperm motility grade (Total motility = Grade a + Grade b).
Some low sperm motility Reasons include:
Excessive stress – Stress, be it physical or psychological can cause fertility issues.
Health conditions – Some health conditions like diabetes, hypothyroidism, obesity, a presence of varicocele, testicular cancer, infection etc. can lead to poor sperm motility.
Poor diet – Vitamin C and Vitamin B12 deficiencies can lead to fertility problems.
Excessive heat – It is said that excessive heat around the genitals can cause fertility issues.
Medications – While trying to conceive, it is advisable to consult a doctor and give the list of medications that have been taken as some medications can lead to male infertility.
Smoke & Drinking – Extreme alcohol consumption and use of tobacco are the cause of many health problems, and in a way may lead to poor sperm count and motility as well.
Genetic factors – Few genes that make the sperm move, such as the proteins in the tail can be mutated that can develop low or non-existent motility.
How does sperm motility affect Pregnancy?
As we know that the sperm has to reach the ovum and fuse with it for the pregnancy to happen. So, sperm should be motile enough to reach the ovum. In the case of low sperm motility, the sperm does not swim well and dies before they reach the ovum. And couples are left unable to conceive.
Sperm motility refers to the movement and swimming of sperm. Poor sperm motility means that the sperm do not swim properly, which can lead to male infertility.
