Relationship between endometriosis and egg quality

Posted by    imhtechp no comments

Endometriosis is an often painful disorder in which the tissue that lines the uterus—the endometrium—grows on other organs inside a woman’s body, like the ovaries or the Fallopian tubes. In Endometriosis these tissues grow, breakdown, and bleed just like the endometrium inside the uterus, except because they’re outside, this cycle can cause irritation or inflammation in surrounding organs or even develop scar tissue, known as “adhesions,” that can cause organs to attach to each other. Large ovarian cysts – over 3 cm or 1.2 inches in diameter – negatively affect a woman’s ability to produce eggs.

An inflammatory atmosphere for eggs

One possible mechanism for the connection between endometriosis and egg quality reduction is that endometriosis may produce an inflammatory environment in the reproductive system.

Reduced blood flow

Another possible cause for the endometriosis and egg quality connection goes back to the scar tissue present in the reproductive system of a woman with endometriosis. These scar tissue can compromise blood flow to or within the ovaries, meaning the ovaries are getting less oxygen than they would otherwise. The lesser oxygen levels may disturb eggs that don’t mature properly, and are therefore not able to fertilize, implant or develop in a healthy way.

Endometriosis Symptoms

Most women are not aware that they are suffering from endometriosis until they try unsuccessfully to conceive naturally. The most common symptoms of endometriosis are chronic cramping, heavy bleeding, and menstrual cycle irregularities. Women mistakenly believe that these symptoms are normal.

Most women with endometriosis have no symptoms. When a woman do experience signs and symptoms of endometriosis they may include:

  • Pelvic pain that may worsen during menstruation
  • Painful intercourse
  • Painful bowel movements or urination
  • Infertility
